LIHEAP

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. ADECA contracts with Macon-Russell Community Action Agency, Inc.  to deliver LIHEAP to low-income households in Macon and Russell counties.

The objectives of LIHEAP are to help low-income families meet the costs of home energy, defined as heating and cooling of residences, and to increase their energy self-sufficiency and reduce their vulnerability resulting from energy needs.

The target population is low-income households, especially those with the lowest incomes and the highest home energy costs or needs in relation to income, taking into account family size. Additional targets are low-income households with members who are especially vulnerable, including the elderly, persons with disabilities and young children. In order to receive assistance, the applicant’s household income must not exceed 150% of the federally established poverty level.

ABC Trust

The Alabama Power Foundation equips its partners with tools and resources to build revenue streams and sustain charitable impact by deploying resources through Impact Investing and Collaborative Impact strategies. Through Impact Investing, the foundation invests grant funds to provide partners with low-cost capital to then be recycled to support other charitable projects. Collaborative Impact convening strategies connect nonprofits with development and technical assistance to attract greater resources to build capacity, track outcomes and carry out the nonprofits’ missions more effectively.

Project Share

For over 20 years, Project SHARE, or Services to Help Alabamians with Relief on Energy, has been assisting qualified families in Alabama with paying their utility, heating, and cooling bills. The Salvation Army oversees the program and the money is for the disabled and elderly in the state.

The program relies on donations from the community. It is an emergency energy bill assistance program that is available as a last resort. The aid is for the elderly, seniors, and disabled citizens and funds can be paid out in peak winter and summer months. 

As funding allows, Project SHARE provides emergency cash assistance to the state’s elderly and disabled neighbors. 

Eligibility requirements can change from year to year based on funding and other conditions. The Salvation Army will set the limits and terms of the program. Funding is limited and is normally issued on a first come and served basis.

Dollar Help (Spire)

The Dollar Help Program offers Spire customers the opportunity to donate $1, monthly, to help other customers in need of assistance with their natural gas bills.
